The good people at AMAfeed.com reached out to me a few months ago to see if I wanted to host a #FreelanceAMA on their site. I finally got around to plugging it into my calendar and my AMA will start on Thursday June 14 at noon. I hope you’ll join me!
So what’s an AMA? It’s shorthand for “ask me anything.”
This particular site hosts a variety of different channels, including freelancing. I’m excited to sharewith you my expertise on the topic. For those of you who don’t know, I’ve been a full-time freelance writer in Miami for the last eight years.
I moved here knowing next to no one with only a business plan, money in savings and a few meager writing samples. Over the course of eight years, I’ve grown a humble freelance writing business with social media, content marketing and copywriting clients into a thriving career as a lifestyle, travel and features journalist for regional, national and international magazines and newspapers.
My work has appeared in The Telegraph, Afar, Maxim, American Way and Time Out. I’ve contributed cover stories to almost every section of the Miami Herald including Business, Real Estate, Health, Travel and Tropical Life. I’m the hotels and travel editor for Miami.com and I contribute regularly to nearly every regional lifestyle magazine in the area.
I’ve managed to not only sustain myself financially over the course of the last eight years, but also to thrive and learn how to weather setbacks without going broke. I’ve surprised myself by how much I enjoy the business side of freelancing, from setting rates to negotiating, budgeting, building a network, nurturing relationships, pitching, prospecting and setting goals to continually grow as a writer and command higher rates.
I am passionate about the freelance life as a viable and rewarding way to make a living and I would love to share what I’ve learned with you. It requires a lot of hard work and dedication, but once you get a taste of the autonomy that comes with working creatively on your own terms, you’ll never want to look back. Even if you’re just looking to add a few freelance gigs to your full-time job or you want to make the transition from part-time to full-time, I have plenty of insight to offer.
So… what are you waiting for? Ask me anything.
Join me over on AMAfeed.com. I’ll be taking questions for a whole week and people have already begun posting some great ones. I’m looking forward to talking freelance with you.
