The Porch and The Other Side. Photo by Nick Doll.

There’s a classic way of doing Key West. It involves dinner at Louie’s Backyard, drinks and live music at Sloppy Joe’s, photo ops at the Southernmost Buoy, a stop at the Hemingway House, spotting Key West chickens and sunset at Mallory Square. And, of course, plenty of key lime pie, conch fritters and margaritas. But a younger, hipper Key West has emerged thanks to a few longtime locals turned entrepreneurs and restaurateurs who are shaping the culture of the […]

A few of my favorite poets & poems: Billy Collins' Aimless Love, Mark Strand's Black Sea, Dora Malech's To The You Of Ten Years Ago, Now, The Complete Poems of Elizabeth Bishop, Selected Poetry of Edna St. Vincent Millay, How To Eat A Poem, & Jennifer Chapis' Rain At The Beach.

When I was a middle school Humanities teacher in New York City, poetry was my favorite unit to teach. I loved it mostly because of how much my students loved it. All of a sudden, my most problematic and reluctant students were letting their guards down and opening up to creativity and self-expression. I made it fun for them. I acknowledged that they didn’t have to understand every word or what the poet was trying to say, but just to […]

The San Carlos Institute on Duval Street, home of the Key West Literary Seminar

I’ve been back from Key West for a week since my 11 day trip to work on the event staff of the 32nd Annual Key West Literary Seminar. My Travel Wish List

Where in the world? Somewhere in the central Spanish mountainside.

2013 was a pretty incredible year of travel for me. Since launching the blog a year ago yesterday, a whole world of travel and writing opportunities opened up. I ventured abroad to Mexico, Curacao, Costa Rica and the Bahamas. Within the U.S., I visited my typical “second home” destinations of Key West, New York and Atlanta. I also visited best friends in Nashville and Pittsburgh. And I discovered a little more of the state of Florida with trips to Tampa, […]

A painting by Picasso at Art Basel Miami Beach 2012

They say that switching up your normal routine is a great way to meet guys. You know, go somewhere different for happy hour or take up a new hobby. Well, Miami does the work for you every year during the first week of December when Art Basel Miami Beach washes ashore an international import of men you’ve never met before. While I, for one, have sworn off long distance love affairs (at least until the next really tempting one comes […]

RYCA hits REFRESH

RYCA

For East London artist RYCA, you could say all the world is his toy chest. Drawing inspiration from Pop Art and London’s street and stencil art movement, he’s managed to create a playful, light-hearted world revolving around a few of his favorite things, comic books, sci-fi movies and most importantly, Star Wars. Embracing the Digital Age’s devaluation of original works due to the easily reproduced and proliferated nature of imagery on the Internet, RYCA’s work riffs on iconic pop culture images, […]

Fethiye

This leg of Ted’s trip made me the most jealous. That is, until I saw his photos in the south of France (wait until tomorrow!), which also made me faint with jealousy. I love boats and sailing, and one of my dream trips is to sail through Greece. Ted’s voyage along Turkey’s coast was basically living my dream. Enjoy! By Ted Donath Our seven-night sailing adventure began in Fethiye, a bustling port town on the southwest coast of Turkey. We took […]
